the turkey story
This year, we decided to indulge a bit on the Thanksgiving turkey. We reserved our all natural 14 - 16lb Whole Foods turkey a few days before Thanksgiving. We were willing to pay the $1.99/lb for all natural but not the $3.99/lb for the USDA certified organic. As we moseyed to the meat counter on Wednesday night, they told us that they had run out of the all natural and instead would give us the organic for the same price. Plus they only had a 12 or 17lb-er, so we went with the 17. Needless to say, we had a lot of turkey! But, boy was it dee-lish with an herbes de Provence recipe. We decided we would try waiting till the last minute next year too, in hopes of getting the same deal. :)

beautiful day
I wasn't expecting it, but today was a beautiful day. We walked outside and the overcast skies and the cooler air didn't capture my attention at first. But as we slowly began pruning some bushes, planting some bulbs, and milling around the yard, I realized how gorgeous the day was.
After an extended summer, the leaves have finally changed color and some much needed rain turned the tree bark dark brown. It was also an away game for UNC, meaning there weren't tailgaters or news helicopters making noise around our house. The birds were quiet and the only noise I heard was the scratching of squirrels and my feet rustling the leaves.

It's amazing what a long rainy, cool weekend can do to a person's soul when they've come from parched drought stricken lands. We had a refreshing time with the Cooleys and got to see the fall foliage at it's peak. Andy suggested I spread the beauty out over a few days on the blog. So, Enjoy!

spider lily
I got a little carried away with the photos, but I find spider lilies absolutely beautiful. They are a striking flower that emerges in the fall as everything else is starting to fade away. And when they do emerge, it's an absolute shock. You've forgotten they're coming and then one day you round the corner, as I did, and are amazed by the brilliance of color waiting for you.

like we were there
The Surukis let us come over and watch their sweet HD TV for the Nebraska game last night. Though the first half was good, Nebraska didn't last through the 3rd (where was the rush defense?!). Oh well. I actually got to see a game and the Surukis fed us good food!

And in case you didn't know, Google proved that Bill Bellamy did not get his start on the Real World.... :)

the balcony - montenegro
We've been in Montenegro nearly a week, and how quickly it has gone! A significant amount of our time has been spent on Elizabeth's front balcony which has incredible views of the mountains, the bay and the sea. Since Andy posted pictures of some of our outings, I figured I'd dedicate this entry to the photos taken on the balcony. (click on thumbnail to see full picture)

snow!
Andy rolled out of bed this morning, opened the blinds and exclaimed, "snow!" It was wonderful! When I heard there was a possibility of snow, I figured it would be flurries and melt once it hit the ground. But as you can see, that was not the case. Schools are closed, but work is still on. Oh well, I'll just have to wear my Nebraska shirt today.

pollan @ unc
Michael Pollan, author of The Omnivore's Dilemma, spoke at UNC last week. He focused on the "hunting and gathering" meal from the book and I enjoyed hearing him read and tell more about that experience. I would have preferred to here more about his time on the sustainable farm, but unfortunately the question and answer time turned into people standing on their soap boxes as to how great Carrboro/ Chapel Hill is in creating an alternative food system. I was annoyed and think he was too. It's pretty bad when after 10 minutes he had to interupt one woman and ask if she actually had a question.
