franklin street top 6
Joint post from Charity and Andy
We're just back from Franklin St and can hear the news helicopters circling over head trying to get shots of the 75,000 people mulling around in costume two blocks from our house. Here's our quick top 6 costumes from our hour up there. We're suckers for group costumes so those got extra props from us.
1. Tetris (see below)
2. iPod Commercial (picture two women with bright colored poster board strapped to their backs and them dressed in black leotards)
3. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (see below) - (Mahmoud wasn't a dead ringer for the actual Mahmoud but I about fell over when I read the sign referencing this controversy. . . too funny)
4. Leftovers (picture a girl wrapped in aluminum foil and saran wrap with "leftovers" written across her stomach)
5. Dodgeball (the movie)
6. Hawaii Driver's License (see below)

amherst
It's amazing what a long rainy, cool weekend can do to a person's soul when they've come from parched drought stricken lands. We had a refreshing time with the Cooleys and got to see the fall foliage at it's peak. Andy suggested I spread the beauty out over a few days on the blog. So, Enjoy!

new google reader gadget
One of the things I least like about reading blogs via a reader (i.e. bloglines, google reader) is that you miss out on the environment of the blog design. Of course, you could take an extra click or two to get to your blog of choice from your reader, but it's kind of a pain getting there and returning. Thus I was delighted to come across Google reader's new "Next" gadget. You stick it on your Firefox bookmark toolbar and whenever you feel like checking out blogs within their original design, you push the "Next" button and it will take you to the next blog on your reader list with a new post. Check it out!

the funnies
While I think the funniest thing that Stephen Colbert has done is his series "Know A District," his recent guest appearance as a NY Times columnist left me laughing out loud.
Andy says that John Stewart and Stephen Colbert are good for America. Amen. Now if only we had cable. :-/
P.S. Thank you NYTimes for letting us poor people read your columnists again.

the truth is lost
This morning I caught up on the debate regarding the Frost family that the Democrats used as a poster child for the need for government sponsored health care. The event started a flurry of activity in op-ed columns and blogs.
If you can find the truth wandering around somewhere in this argument, feel free to let me know. Because to my eye's it's been lost.

an undecided vote
After dutifully ignoring the '08 presidential election hype up to this point, my ears are starting to warm up to the candidates. It seems like an odd match, but right now the candidates who have a chance of receiving my vote are former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee (who even some of my liberal atheist friends like) and Senator Hillary Clinton (who some of my conservative Christian friends are afraid of).
I never thought Hillary had a chance in the election, let alone that I would consider voting for her. But I have to tell you, I have been impressed with her realistic view of the war in Iraq (it's gone sour, but we can't pull out), her willingness to call Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps a terrorist group, her openness to free trade, and her ability to work across party lines -- I found this op-ed piece this morning interesting.
Since I moved to North Carolina, I can't remember if I registered as a Republican or an Independent, but I definitely have Republican leanings. And I have to tell you, I am not impressed with the group of Republicans trying to gain our attention. Folks from Arkansas that I know have all had nothing but positive things to say about Huckabee and the video and audio clips show him as a likeable, articulate man. But I don't feel I know much about him yet. I watched a video clip of his speech at a church talking about how America was founded as a Christian nation and a clip from the last debate that made both Andy and I look at each other oddly -- though for the life of me I can't remember what it was about.
In my mind, the biggest issue is the war. I can't vote for Obama because he has very little experience and am afraid of him being Commander and Chief. I like McCain because of his military experience and think he could be a good Commander and Chief, but he definitely doesn't feel like a diplomacy kind of guy.
I'm still looking for the Republican candidate who can have a good running against Hillary. But right now, I don't see it.

camaraderie
Last night I had a wonderful conversation with an old friend, where we had a long talk about our issues and experiences with counseling. My friend had the quote of the evening, when she said (not verbatim):
"You know, I don't feel like such a nutcase when I hear that other people are crazy too."
Amen! Just one of the reasons why God created us to live in community.

the green schaeffer
I have a hard time understanding the argument of some Christians that God will take care of creation and therefore we don't need to. Even so, this article in the Wall Street Journal does a good job of explaining how wide the spectrum is of where Christians fall on environmental issues. And one of the more interesting aspects of the article is its extensive reference to Francis Schaeffer.
