a return to fiction
It seems that our jaunt across the ocean has kindled, or re-kindled, a love for reading fiction. It helped that the books I read were fantastic. The book I enjoyed the most was A Tale of Two Cities. I picked it up with the thought that it was "one of those books" everyone should read. Though I thought I should read it (and anticipated having to trudge through), when I picked it up I couldn't put it down and read it in about two and a half days. It was intriguing with characters that you love and are eager to learn and understand more about. I felt that about the characters as well as the history of the time - I'm now hoping to learn more about the French Revolution.
While A Tale of Two Cities was my favorite, I heartily enjoyed Lewis' perspective on the divide between heaven and hell in the The Great Divorce. I devoured and eventually cried through The Kite Runner. And my second reading of Love in the Time of Cholera was better than the first. I recommend them all!

Ah, this is great. I was just wondering about Love in the Time of Cholera the other day. I've never read it, but I will now. I also see that I have A Tale of Two Cities on my bookshelf, and I guess I should give that a spin also. :)
Welcome home.

I'm thrilled you found great fiction! (Welcome to my world.) The Dickens book was an absolute favorite from school days -- but for the life of me I can't recall the plot. Time to re-read, I suppose! The Kite Runner was excellent. Haven't read the other two -- thanks for the recommendations...
I'm glad to have you "back" to this side of the ocean, only because I like to read your blog posts. Can't wait to hear more about your adventures. xo

Glad you enjoyed the Dickens - I've been meaning to read Kite Runner for a while - you've inspired me to actually pick it up...good stuff!

The Kite Runner was stunningly beautiful, and heartbreaking. I read it with a church book club (mostly Covenant grads) I was a part of before we moved. I was really glad to read it with a group of people I could talk it out with, especially because parts of it were so hard to read. All of those little kids experiencing different kinds of tragedy. :-(
